Scottish Wrestling’s Top Moments 2017

2017 is coming to a close, so what better way to celebrate than to go through five of the top moments in Scottish wrestling this year.

BT Gunn completes the ICW Grand Slam

At ICW Fear & Loathing X in front of over 4000 people, BT Gunn completed the Grand Slam in Insane Championship Wrestling. Having held the ICW Heavyweight Championship, ICW Tag Team Championships with Chris Renfrew, ICW Zero G Championship and now the ICW World Heavyweight Championship. Something that no one has come close too. A phenomenal feat for BT Gunn who has held heavyweight championships in SWA, BCW and PBW, well on his way to obtaining a Grand Slam in Scottish wrestling on a whole.

The WWE United Kingdom Championship is defended at Insane Championship Wrestling

Pete Dunne defended his WWE United Kingdom Championship as part of ICW’s Shug’s Hoose Party 4 Weekender in a blistering match up against Trent Seven, Wolfgang and BT Gunn. The first time the WWE United Kingdom Championship was defended outside of WWE on British soil.

Viper makes it to the quarter finals of the WWE Mae Young Classic

When the WWE Mae Young Classic was announced two well deserved Scottish names appeared, Kay Lee Ray and Piper Niven aka Viper. Kay Lee Ray went out in the Round of 32 against Princesa Sugehit of Mexico whereas Viper passed favourites Santana Garrett and Serena Deeb before falling to Toni Storm in the quarterfinals.

Wolfgang makes the semifinals of the WWE United Kingdom Tournament

The major announcement to kick off 2017 was the unveiling of the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament. With names such as Mark Andrews, Danny Burch and all three members of British Strong Style (Trent Seven, Pete Dunne & Tyler Bate) one of the surprises was, at the time, the current ICW World Heavyweight Champion Wolfgang. Wolfgang bested HC Dyer and Trent Seven before falling to the eventual winner, Tyler Bate, in the semifinals. Since putting in a great showing, Wolfgang has appeared in WWE NXT television as well as live events and on tours making up one of the core members of the WWE UK roster.

Triple H appears at an Insane Championship Wrestling event

With all that’s being going on this year between WWE and ICW it was only a matter of time before something colossal happened, we thought that the WWE United Kingdom Championship being defended was the peak, we thought Noam Dar returning for one night was the top of the mountain, it wasn’t NXT star Kassius Ohno making his debut in ICW, it was the WWE COO, multiple time World Heavyweight Champion and one of the biggest names in professional wrestling, Triple H turning up at an ICW event in Cardiff around the corner from a WWE show that was due to take place that evening.
